Which IELTS Test Should I Take in Dubai: Academic or General?

A good IELTS Score can prove your English language skills! It will help you to study in any top universities abroad and can even be used for immigration and professional registration purposes. But are you confused about choosing the right IELTS test in Dubai? There are two types of IELTS test you can take-IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. To get out of the confusion, we have given a detailed comparison between the IELTS Academic vs IELTS General training in this blog. Read on!

1.Purpose: Academic IELTS vs. General Training IELTS

The Academic is designed for students for higher education and professionals such as doctors or nurses to set up job practice in an English-speaking country. The test proves your ability to grasp and understand academic language. The General is designed for those who are aspiring to obtain non-academic training or to gain work experience and for immigration purposes too. The test proves your conversational skills and the ability to converse in English in social or business situations.

2.Format: Academic IELTS vs. General Training IELTS

Both the test takers have the same general format for writing, reading, listening, and speaking sections. All these skills will be tested separately no matter which test you take. In fact, the listening and speaking sections for the IELTS academic or general test are exactly the same. Even the writing and reading sections also follow the same format. It involves 2 writing tasks and 40 questions in response to assigned readings.

3.Content: IELTS Academic vs. IELTS General Training

The Academic IELTS uses language that would appear in professional and academic journals, textbooks, relevant magazines, and newspapers to test the comprehension skills of university students and professionals. Writing skills will be tested by asking you to describe, summarise or explain a chart, graph, table, or diagram. The General Training IELTS, on the other hand, will use a language that would appear in advertisements, guidebooks, magazines, notices, or what working people might encounter in employee manuals. Writing skills will be tested on general tasks such as letter writting or basic essay writing.

4. Score: IELTS Academic vs. IELTS General Training

Listening, Speaking, and Writing sections have the same set of scores for both exams. But IELTS Reading scores have a different meaning depending on whether you’re looking at the IELTS academic or general test. For example, 30 out of 40 answers correct in general reading, gives an IELTS Band of 5.0. But 6.0 in academic reading.

Ultimately it’s hard to say which test is easier. It is 70% similar and the difference lies only in their purpose and content. So always keep the above tips in mind while booking your IELTS exam in Dubai. Hope you found this article useful!
